Welcome to HOTEL AMORE INC., a place I created so we can talk about all the fun, whimsical as well as finer things in life. These things come from the world of the internet, traveling, seeing and meeting artists and galleries, interesting individuals that cross my path. The range of topics spans from fashion to what’s good in culture, the top spots of the world, art and books, and whatever else is crossing my mind to make this a place of escaping from the ordinary to extraordinary delight and boundless inspiration. Have fun!
Visual Chair Plaisir
The House Of Chairs - how I sometimes like to call our flat. Chairs are my absolute favorite interior piece. I definitely have too many, but I believe each great chair adds its personality to the rooms in a unique way. I've acquired all my chairs from vintage markets, bought them off friends, found them on vintage platforms. Some I had researched for months and then sourced in other cities. Once, my mom kindly picked up a Wassily for me from an eBay seller near our family house - I managed the deal and respective PayPaled payment over the phone from Berlin, I felt like a bidder on a phone auction. It was great.
The purpose of this article is to give you some inspiration for some beautiful chair candy. I went through my favourite research platforms such as 1st Dibs, Pamono, Whoppa, Catawiki to show you some great chairs (linked in their title). There is also a new kid in town, called 2nd Home - I haven’t purchased from the platform but it looks promising! Some of the below are more for inspiration to understand what you are looking for, some platforms are for actual buying; You’ll see which is which. The true vintage hunting begins when you know what you want, which you can find out by going to the bigger vintage sellers as well as by google lensing magazines the furniture you like. General rule of thumb is: The worse the user experience on the chosen platform, the better the catch can be. If you are ready to detangle messy search engines, you have a much smaller audience to compete with :) Even if certain platforms have prices out of range, it can be worth to take a look in order to train your eye, and to understand what great quality and design look like.
Special advice: Always confirm shipping costs and potential extra fees before buying. For international and national shipping, you can use Shiply, always ensure the drivers have top ratings and experience. Stick to 5* rated, experienced drivers. Purchase only from verified sellers, as the market is rife with replicas or know what you are doing.
Now, let’s get to the chairs:
Kartell Plastic Chairs 4875 by Carlo Bartoli for Kartell 1970s
Imagine it around a steel table, silver with green would be fantastic.
Edoardo Lietti Studio Sedia Tonda
Interesting shape, looks very architectural.
RH-301 Chair By Robert & Trix Haussmann for De Sede, 1960er
These colors put in the right setting - j’adore. Comes in a set of two, and with a hefty price tag.
Tecno, Rude Bravo Design Workshop - Franco Perrotti
Needs to be in the right setting to not look weird-funky, but in the right one they could have the good-funky vibe.
Vintage Chair
Really love objects that have an unexpected shape such as this chair.
Italian Mid Century Modern Baffo Chair by Gianni Pareschi and Ezio Didone, 1969
This shape is fantastic and looks very comfortable.
Gilbert Marklund Chair for Furusnickarn, 1970s
I love the green and the shape!
Chrome and Leather Lounge Chair circa 1970
The turquoise-grey leather and the silver metal together are just a feast for the eye.
Ludwig Mies Van Der Rohe, Knoll International, Side Chair
I found these for myself on eBay two years ago and managed to get them somehow from a tiny village close to our flat. The only thing I then realized is that chairs can have different seating heights and these are quite low. Now, we have some pretty low chairs that don't perfectly fit our table, but at least they look good. I found another offer for these chairs here for 1.800€ from a design gallery, I would always recommend to negotiate - you can use this book for help!
Rope Chair Adrien Audoux & Frida Minet for Vibo Vesoul, 1940s
I am imagining this chair in a beautiful bedroom that is entirely white, perhaps in the South, near the sea...
Le Corbusier LC4 Chair Cassina
I absolutely love this iconic model. One day, I hope to find the right one at a good price. However, it's important to be cautious, as this particular chair has been widely copied!
Jorge Zalszupin Modern Brasiliana Arm Chairs, 1960s
These chairs are likely more for inspiration. I adore the combination of dark wood with the soft material.
Camaleonda sofa by Mario Bellini for B&B Italia, 1970s
This is not a chair, and Camaleonda is no an unseen piece BUT this is the end of the article and I wanted to end on something bombastic and extraordinary, so here we go. I will never get tired of Camaleonda, it’s just such a beautiful piece. This seller from the Netherlands has a great Instagram account to get inspired, worth following!
I hope you enjoyed this intro to chairs! If you have any more great platforms or incredible, additional vintage chair hunting tips, please share below <3 I will share some smaller sellers next week. If you are a smaller seller, give me a heads up on Instagram, if it fits, I will include you.
